Self-Assessment Media (SAM)

This method is based on a series of pictures of puppets which are used for measuring three dimensions of emotions by using three axes; pleasure – displeasure, degree of arousal and dominance-submissiveness. The method is design for collecting information about subjective feelings. Instead of selecting one picture to represent the emotional state of the user, the user uses several dimensions to describe the positions of his/her emotion on each continuum separately. This method is most feasible when used for measuring emotions before use and after use (Isomursu et al. 2007). Positive experiences from the SAM method is that it is easy to use, simple equipment requirements, results in numerical form, easy to analyse and it gives information from pleasure, arousal and dominance. The negative experiences from using the method are that it sometimes is difficult to interpret and understand the scales, it requires additional data collection if explanation are sought, difficult to perform during use, more suitable for capturing emotions before and after use.
